30 days of public posts

It’s been interesting to commit to post publicly (almost) every day in December. (I’ll be busy tomorrow, so I’m stopping today.) At first I felt like I should be posting thoughtful essays every day on engaging topics, and my posts were too slight. Then I felt like I was taking up too much space posting every day and it was good I was pointing to other people’s content.

I noticed similar concerns with posting more comments on other people’s posts, too. Did those folks want my commentary?

I wondered if I would find things to post about. Much like my monthly articles, ideas did float up as needed. It made me pay attention and focus on dreamwidth in a different way to be keeping an eye out for (public) topics. I did end up posting fewer locked rants than I might have otherwise.

So there you have it! A 30 day window into some of the things I think about.

Very helpful to read, if for no other reason that I realize I'm not alone in the kinds of thoughts I be about whether anyone cares and whether I'm taking up to much space.

Glad it’s helpful, and sorry to hear you struggle with that too. There’s so much pressure to keep ourselves small to keep others comfortable, even when there are plenty of electrons for everyone.

It can be hard to do the switch over to "these people want to be here. If they didn't, they'd unsubscribe." Especially with all the be people coming in and getting adjusted to the idea that they have to say a thing for it to be noticed and recorded.

I come here to read people's posts, so the idea that someone might be worried that they are taking up too much space never occurred to me. I don't comment much, but I always read all the posts on my reading page. And I've enjoyed reading your posts.
