Farmers Market
Mar. 28th, 2020 08:44 pmAs a source of essential groceries, the Portland Farmers Market is still open. With social distancing measures of course. It's my habit to bike over there every week and get seasonal veggies for the stir-fry I eat all the time.
I weighed the pros and cons, and decided to go today. If we're in lockdown for many weeks (as we should be!) I'm going to have to get vegetables somewhere, and a fresh-air market seems as good or better than the co-op or another store. Plus I want to support the farmers I always buy from. Plus I could also get food for someone who has even more food restrictions than I do, and much more fragile health.
It felt so good to have a part of my routine back, and buy from the usual vendors, and renew my supply of fresh food. Something in me relaxes when I'm well-supplied. My friend was delighted too. Maybe I'll go every two weeks, if that remains a viable plan as the situation continues to change.
Each vendor implements social distancing in their own way. Groundwork Organics was taking orders and payment at one end, and delivering a pile of vegetables at the other end. Another vendor said they were still accepting egg cartons to re-use, to my astonishment. While I usually give them my empties, I think I'm going to skip that for a while.
