Things I've run across lately that make me think, "oooh, shiny!"

Blackbird by The Beatles sung in Mi'kmaq sung by Emma Stevens.
The International Year of Indigenous Languages is a United Nations observance in 2019 that aims to raise awareness of the consequences of the endangerment of Indigenous languages across the world, with an aim to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation.

To bring awareness to this important cause students at Allison Bernard Memorial High School in Eskasoni, Cape Breton recorded Paul McCartney's Blackbird in their native Mi'kmaq language.

Also, the first comment:
"I'm a teacher in Surrey, BC, and I have a Mi'kmaq student in my class this year who was moved to tears by hearing her traditional language for the first time. Your video has launched her journey of self-discovery. You're having an impact all the way across the country. Thank you. <3"

A Valiant Snail distance musical collaboration by Jenny Sapora, Jen Morris, and Dina Trageser, including an adorable animation.

Michele Simon Simply Voice youtube channel. I went to a Balkan music camp this summer solely because Michele Simon was going to be teaching there, and I logged in to Facebook (!) to see these recent mini-workshops on Balkan singing. Now she's posted them to youtube, and I highly recommend checking them out. She's warm, kind, very knowledgeable, and geeky about singing in a way that really works for me.

Georgian Ancient Songs (1969) by Otar Iosseliani.
Although titled Georgian Ancient Songs, this 20-minute documentary is not too bothered with its documentary aspect. With the Georgian chants in the background, this capsule of Georgian bucolic life, the hardships and small pleasures of these folks, is almost touching and mesmerizing in its simplicity, honesty and emotional clarity.
I've only watched bits of this so far, and I notice the filmmaker captures men singing while women work.

A Bean Collector's Window 336 (!) rare heirloom bean varieties, available for mail order. I wish he included more info about how they cook up. I recommend clicking just to see the header image.
"Hi! I'm Russ Crow. Gardener, and bean collector. These pages are a little about my bean collection. I first began collecting beans around the middle of the 1970's. Beans are not only easy to grow, but once you get to know them better are as beautiful and varied as anything else. I once read where beans were not only bred to nourish the body, but also bred for their beauty to feed the spirit. Indeed they do."

I've been seeing a lot of broken images (not displaying at all) here on dreamwidth. Some images display fine. I kind of figured it was an access problem, or an image size problem.

I finally tracked it down on this post of [personal profile] asakiyume's, Casual Resemblances, which she kindly informed me has embedded Twitter images. I confirmed that I could view it fine on Safari, but the images didn't show up on Firefox even with all 4 (!) of my ad-block and privacy plugins disabled.

From this Firefox support post I learned that Firefox's built-in Tracking Protection is causing the problem. From that second linked post I learned that I can disable it per-site by clicking on the shield at the far left of the address bar. Kinda tedious to do that every time I want to see an image, but better than being left in the dark.
