Hello from Ashland! I made it down here with Basil and a bunch of boxes in the HUMONGOUS MAROON FORD ENTERPRISE MAX SUV that they rented me instead of the minivan I reserved. It turns out to be fairly easy to drive on the freeway, but I'm avoiding driving on smaller streets for fear of sideswiping parked cars.

Wow, the southern half of Oregon is gorgeous! I've been through here before, but didn't expect the sun lighting up dramatic slopes between rainstorms. It was sleeting in one of the mountain passes, which was also dramatic and I was glad when that was over.

A friend kindly came over this morning and helped me load the SUV so that I can still see out the back window, and they also came over on Friday evening and helped me dismantle the futon frame and do a bunch of packing. It's amazing how long it takes to pack. I've been working on it for over a month. Everything did get done in time for the movers, and I got out of the house at about noon today after last-minute packing and cleaning.

Two movers came on Saturday (yesterday!) and professionally close-packed the PODS container and then tied it all down. I'm reasonably confident my stuff will arrive in California next week still intact.

Basil has tolerated car travel with his usual mellowness and is sitting in my lap as I type. He's very suspicious of the hotel room, but I'm hoping he'll settle into the new place fairly quickly once we get there tomorrow. On another friend's advice I kept his big cat tree, and I'm sure he'll be happy to see that next week.
