Recently I was reminded of my favorite Zora Neale Hurston quote.

“When God had made The Man, he made him out of stuff that sung all the time and glittered all over. Some angels got jealous and chopped him into millions of pieces, but still he glittered and hummed. So they beat him down to nothing but sparks but each little spark had a shine and a song. So they covered each one over with mud. And the lonesomeness in the sparks make them hunt for one another.”
― Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God

As I was poking around online, I found this fabulous webpage:
Hear Zora Neale Hurston Sing Traditional American Folk Song “Mule on the Mount” (1939) by Josh Jones.
I didn't know she was a professional anthropologist, singer, and song collector. How wonderful that we can still hear her voice.

That recording is from the Library of Congress. There are many results there for
Zora Neale Hurston, audio
