I volunteered in a kindergarten class a few times in the early 2000's, and I didn't encounter that usage (fortunately!) but I did notice that much of the time was spent training the kids to be passive, quiet, and obedient. I understand that the teacher gets overwhelmed otherwise dealing with 20 small children, but I still couldn't stomach it.
Have you had a chance to respond directly to someone using "respect yourselves" that way? How would you handle it? I wouldn't know where to start!
