The big move
After last-minute drama with the apartment I had rented in an Oakland high-rise before moving, I landed in the middle apartment of a triplex in the flats of El Cerrito, north of Berkeley, coincidentally about a mile from where I lived when I first moved to the Bay Area in 1989. I appreciated the area a lot more this time around. I enjoyed walking to stores and the farmers market and BART and Cerrito Creek.
I still wanted to be more centrally located, and the more I thought about where I used to live in northern Oakland, the more that location seemed ideal. After a lot of house-hunting, I found a condo in a 4-plex just a few blocks from my old location. I moved in August, and I’m just starting to feel settled in.
Through both moves, I continued working remotely at the programming job I started in April. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a bad fit, so I had to gird myself to start job hunting just when I wanted to settle in to my new home and rest. I’m looking forward to finding a new job soon and having more stability again.
What helps
It has been a full year of planning, moving, uncertainty, and change. I am grateful to everything that has helped me move forward, even when it was not a good fit long-term. Staying in the moment, listening to my body, making room for my emotions, respecting my inner “no” and “yes,” and talking with wise friends have all helped me find a way through.
Word of the year
My word of the year for 2022 has been “Home.” I feel much more at home in the Bay Area and I’m delighted to have returned, despite all the upheaval and hard work it took to get here. It’s been wonderful to reconnect with old friends and my favorite hilly bike rides and my singing teachers.
My word for 2023 is “Trust.” I’m hoping it will spark settling and rest more than dramatic change.
