Embodying Hope: Introduction

Embodying Hope CoverEmbodying Hope is available!
You can place orders for Embodying Hope on my website (US only), at Powell's Books, or at Amazon. You can also special order it at your favorite local bookstore or request it at your library.

You will enjoy Robyn Posin's delightful drawings at the head of each chapter and article. Thanks to her for generous permission to use the drawings, and gentle, persistent encouragement to create the book.

In-person reopening
On March 1, I opened my in-person practice to clients who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. I am also fully vaccinated. I'm looking forward to seeing you again!

I sympathize with everyone who is frustrated that the vaccine rollout has been less smooth and equitable than we all wish. If you are medically ineligible for the vaccine and would like to come in, contact me to discuss your situation. Why only vaccinated clients? See the FAQ.

I will continue to offer online sessions as well.

Try a new narrative: “My perceptions and responses make sense. I am intrinsically good. I am doing my best with the resources and knowledge I have.” Naomi Ceder kindly sent me an update on how she's doing four years later, which I added at the end of this article based on her work from 2016.

Embodying Hope Cover
Embodying Hope so close!
I uploaded the final files for Embodying Hope to LightningSource today, following an epic struggle with Photoshop about ink density on the cover. When I receive and approve a physical proof, I'll make the book available for sale. You can see excerpts linked from the table of contents, as well as a list of links found in the book so readers don't have to type them in.

I might send out a rare second newsletter this month when the book is available, or you can keep an eye on the book's page for Buy buttons. Next I'll be working on the epub and Kindle ebook versions, which have also involved technical struggles in the past.

I'm delighted to share the new book's cover and table of contents. Thanks to Luna Enriquez for her graphic design skills. The cover photo by Robert Bye is of Ein Gedi, an oasis in Israel. I expect the book to be available in February, and the ebook in March.

Word of the Year
My word for 2020 was "kindness." It has been a great word to carry through a pandemic. For 2021, I'm choosing "respect." What are you choosing for your word of the year?

Embodying Hope progress
I am continuing to work on the text for Embodying Hope. Taking a book from idea to embodiment always takes ten times longer than I think it will. I have a great cover design thanks to Luna Enriquez and I'm looking forward to sharing that next month.

New topics on website
This is the last article that will go into the new book, Embodying Hope: Living in Difficult Times With a Difficult Past. I now have all the book's articles organized into chapters, yay! I created two new topics on the website, Hopeful Narratives and Emotions, and added Full Self to Boundaries.

You can explore articles by topic anytime by scrolling down to the list of topics on the website's right sidebar, or going to Articles by Topic under the Articles menu at the top of each page.

Portland update
For those of you who are not local to Portland, OR, I want to reassure you that most of the city is going about its business as usual.  The police and federal agents are conducting their violent assaults on protesters in a small 3 block area downtown. The Black Lives Matter protesters in no way deserve these unconstitutional assaults.

I updated the article Find Calm: A Polyvagal Primer to clarify that we have two vagus nerves, one on the right and one on the left. Each one is a combination of dorsal and ventral fibers. I previously thought there were four separate vagus nerves.

Happy New Year and New Decade!
Best wishes for healing and joy in the coming year and decade. My word of the year last year was "warmth," and I do think more warmth came into my life. I chose "kindness" for this year, which is a word I already think about a lot. Do you choose a word of the year? What do you want to bring in and focus on?
