Not sure what I was dreaming, but I woke up thinking it's patently ridiculous that a woman would have to figure economic survival into her calculations about leaving an abusive relationship. Everyone should have safe, clean, hospitable independent living space available at all times.

Reminds me of Ursula LeGuin's "Always Coming Home." It's been a while since I read it, but I seem to remember homes were available for people to choose and move in to, and the choice of living space was explicitly separate from the choice of sexual partner.

The most recent Race Talks event showed the movie "RACE: The Power of an Illusion, Part 3." The Federal Housing Authority was formed after WWII to provide funding and create housing for returning veterans and their families. Black people were not allowed to purchase homes in these first suburban developments, and white people were encouraged to move out of neighborhoods where a black family settled. Reduced demand for homes in black neighborhoods kept prices lower, keeping black families from accumulating equity that could help them and their children prosper.

The intentional machinery of it all makes me sick to my stomach.
