The Woman Who Revealed the Missing Link Between Viruses and Cancer by Leila McNeill.
Way back in the 1950s, bacterialologist [sic] Sarah Stewart pioneered the concept that viruses could lead to cancer—and was almost thrown out of the scientific community for her heretical ideas.

The improbable story of the bra-maker who won the right to make astronaut spacesuits by Charles Fishman via Body Impolitic.

I had no idea until I read this article. The folks at Playtex (makers of bras and girdles) were actively impeded from competing, but made far and away the best spacesuit, designed and hand-made in 6 weeks. And it worked on the moon!

Bonus link: What White Feminists Get Wrong about Black Women by Guest Contributor. This is so important for white feminists to read.
While ya’ll have been surrounded since birth by strong males and a society that protects you to the point where it feels overpowering, black women are largely on their own from early childhood– the norm, being born out of wedlock to a tired over-worked mother.

I'm getting over food poisoning (or something), and posted to [community profile] gluten_free requesting ideas on bland foods that won't hurt my tender gut. Such a flood of kind and useful responses!

I'm so grateful to [personal profile] runpunkrun (and [personal profile] jesse_the_k) for running the community, and everyone for chiming in. It's lonely being sick on my own, and hard to figure out self-care when I'm already wobbly from not eating, and can't eat the childhood default of gluten-containing saltines.

Bolstered by everyone's suggestions, today I made a two egg omelette with dill from the garden, and separately some white rice cooked with chicken stock. Omnomnom! Made the kitchen smell good, too. So far no major ill effects, although I did have some abdominal pain again hours later.

I went to the farmer's market this morning for eggs, and stopped at a booth that sells medicinal herbs. They suggested calendula and self-heal (never heard of that one before) so I've been drinking tea made from those. Hopefully that will soothe my gut along with the bland food.

I made some plain white rice tonight so I can try [personal profile] rosefox's quick rice pudding recipe tomorrow.
