Falsehoods programmers believe about time zones by Zain Rizvi. I have programmed with time zones. A lot. Most of these were not a surprise to me, although I didn't know that Amsterdam was once at the UTC + 19 minute, 32.13 second offset. (oy!) And now I know why timezone pickers have prominent city names instead of official time zone names. (Hint: there aren't any official time zone names.) Contains entertaining illustrations. "But, Arizona..."

I left one job in part because their lead engineer had architected into the software the assumption that every day has 24 hours. That one didn't even make the article's list! (Hint: Daylight Savings Time.)

That article reminded me of Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names by Patrick McKenzie. I haven't wrestled with naming issues as directly, but it's always good to keep in mind that one's assumptions about users/customers/people are usually wrong.

The truth about unwanted arousal by Emily Nagoski. Profoundly kind. TED talk, has transcript. "And we only do this around sexuality, because arousal nonconcordance happens with every emotional and motivational system we have. If my mouth waters when I bite into a wormy apple, does anybody say to me, "You said no, but your body said yes?" "

Incalculable Loss Project. "We took the iconic New York Times cover from Memorial Day and featured just some of the names of Black lives lost to police violence alongside the status of their case."

The Serviceberry, An Economy of Abundance by Robin Wall Kimmerer. "As Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and ecological systems to reimagine currencies of exchange?" Can we please please start learning from and following the people who actually know how to live sustainably and well!

Alone, Together: Memory and Death in a Pandemic by Kathleen Powers Conti. Stark, powerful, and full of grief.
