How to fix broken permalinks in Wordpress
May. 21st, 2019 08:22 pmFor my future reference, and maybe this will help someone else...
I use the free version of the Easy Testimonials plugin on my Wordpress site, and I like how it works, but it tends to be fragile and break on upgrades. I test upgrades on my staging site first, but issues still come up.
I have (part of) a random testimonial at the bottom of each page. I rarely click on it to see the full version on its own page, and I realized recently that those links were broken. I didn't find anything on the Easy Testimonials support website, so I resigned myself to digging around in the database and fixing links by hand.
When I was searching online to see what table to look at, I came across this lovely article, How To Fix Broken Permalinks In WordPress by Ragnar.
I would never have thought to try this, since I would think it would permanently bork the links that do work. But, I tried it on the staging site, and it worked! I did it on the main site too, and the links have stayed fixed. Yay!!
The permalinks setting is under the Settings menu. Maybe this seems obvious, but it took me some poking around to find it.

The first thing you want to do if you’re having this issue, is to simply reset your permalink settings.
This is simply to double check that it’s an actual issue, and not just a small stutter that might have occured during updating or migrating.
Simply log into your WP Dashboard, then go to the permalinks settings. Change your settings away from the standard setting, for example to numeric, then save changes. Now simply select your standard setting again, and save the changes.
