sonia: Quilted wall-hanging (Default)

I've been playing a lot of I Love Hue lately on my phone (thanks to [personal profile] kaberett). The goal is to set little tiles in order by color gradient. There is no time pressure, and the difficulty increases slowly enough to learn as I go along.

Every couple of games, it shows an ad, mostly for other games. I did eventually plunk down a couple of bucks to stop the ads.

Not only am I learning to look at colors more carefully, but I also find myself using the stages of puzzle-solving as a metaphor.

Especially with the third tesselating shape, it's not immediately obvious which tiles go next to each other. I start by moving tiles of similar colors closer together. Eventually, often after taking a break, the rows of tiles start falling into place.

I've been thinking that it's similar for a disorganized (traumatized) nervous system. In the midst of chaos, it's not clear what the next step is or how to make things better. We start by making small moves that are generally in the right direction. Eventually, partly because time is passing, the right things happen to help the nervous system settle and life begins to work better. As the level of disorganization goes down, it becomes easier to see next steps to make things even better.

It can apply to creative projects too. Start with something that's roughly in the right direction, and eventually more clarity emerges that leads to a finished piece. I have a lot of discomfort with that initial chaotic stage. I like practicing seeing order emerge in the game. For one thing, the game has a pre-set right answer for each set of tiles.
