It's the little things
Jul. 28th, 2020 10:39 pmThe crisis with fascist federal agents assaulting protesters (because the police weren't doing a good enough job?) in downtown Portland is not directly affecting me, even though it's a 15 minute bike ride away. The actual area where all that is happening is a few small city blocks.
I do hear the news helicopters overhead every night, though. I do wonder if/when they will be police helicopters, and then military helicopters.
I leave my upstairs windows cracked open in the summer heat, and every couple of years a wasp comes inside and builds up a mud nest on a curtain rod or window frame. I knocked one down today that was attached to the curtain itself.
At least, since I've had to do it before, I knew that it wasn't likely that a bunch of wasps would come boiling out. But it's still scary, and I still wish I had someone to ask to do it for me. It took courage to do it myself.
I feel like it's taking an inordinate amount of courage just to move through my days. To decide if and when to shop for groceries. To decide if and when to see clients in person. To listen to the helicopters and know people are getting hurt as they speak up for Black lives, and also for our guttering right to peaceful assembly.
