My blueberry bush gave me a tiny handful of blueberries every morning for a month, maybe three or eight ripe ones. I probably didn't even get a whole pint, but I enjoyed them a lot more than I enjoyed the pint I bought and had to eat all at once. My reward for watering the plant every day since March.
I'm getting a larger handful of raspberries every few days from the raspberry bushes in the back. They are kindly bearing with much less irrigation, since I just dug out the drip system where it had gotten buried around those plants.
I've gotten a steady supply of zucchini for stir-fries and baking. Too hot to bake lately, though! I made a salad today with greens and a lemon cucumber and thai basil all from the garden. Those have all gotten daily watering too.
Behold my bean harvest! I planted eight beans, six plants came up, and I've been picking the pods as they dry on the plants. There are a few more waiting to be picked. I can make one batch of soup out of these. Overall a successful first attempt. I'll have to think about whether I want to plant more of them next year, or just keep buying them at the Farmers Market.
It's been nice to have food from the garden this year, especially since the farmers market lines have gotten really long as more people show up in the summer. I'd still rather leave food growing to the professionals overall. Most of all, I'd like to rest secure in the knowledge that I will be able to get food from the professionals as needed, rather than continually wondering what infrastructure will fail next.

A neighbor put out a "please take" flat basket with green, thin-skinned fruit of some sort. MyGuy thought cucumbers; I suspect zucchini. I will know at lunch time.

Date: 2020-08-18 08:20 pm (UTC)Turns out they were Adolescent English Cucumbers!
Date: 2020-08-18 09:19 pm (UTC)Pared them, sliced them, and crunched with total bliss. Made the perfect cool contrast to some Angelica's Garden Fermented Red Cabbage and Ginger.
....mmmm and I have one more for tomorrow.
City living makes it too easy to forget how amazingly delicious truly fresh vegetables are.
