Links and smoky checkin

It's smoky here, and the smoke is laden with burnt plastic and other chemicals that were formerly part of people's homes. Just like when I breathe too much perfume at a concert, I find myself becoming passive, just hunkering down and waiting for it to be over. I don't know if it's part of the migraine somehow or a separate freeze response.
I appreciate other folks checking in and reminding me that I can get out the air purifier and the inside storm windows and at least reduce my exposure. I resent having to seal up the house when it's not even winter, but that's how it is right now. Like a talisman, we're all saying, "It's supposed to rain on Tuesday." It's going to be the most appreciated rainstorm ever.
Fun stuff:
The Ultimate Sitcom by Sam Anderson, Oct 4, 2018. A friend sent me this long article about The Good Place and philosophy, for those of us who don't want to watch TV but want to have a vague idea of what other people are talking about.
The Mountains Where Manna Flows From Trees by Emiliano Ruprah. Having been to some of the physical places where Bible stories take place, I wondered about what manna really is. "But in Pollina, a region in the Madonie mountains of Sicily, there is no question about it: Manna is the sap of a narrow-leaf ash tree called Fraxinus angustifolia."
Sluntse Gree by Avigeya Voices. Here, while I'm sharing my open tabs, have a gorgeous multi-part Bulgarian song in 5/4.
Rano Ranila Mamo, Dilyana sung by Kvartet Trakiiska Mladost (young quartet from Thrace, in Bulgaria). Adding Kalina Moma from the same group. Damn, they're amazing!
Nadezhda Hvojneva singing a Rodope Bulgarian song in 1973. The performance was in Hungary, so the youtube text is in Hungarian.

Smoky disaster stuff:
Basic Disaster Supplies Kit. I suddenly got interested, with people having to evacuate just a few miles from here. I have a lot of supplies, just not packed in one place. And I hadn't thought about the whole thing about taking photos of important documents.
PurpleAir air quality map. Zoomed in on Portland, but you can zoom out and zoom back in on whatever region you're interested in. Currently my area is in the 450 range. Yes I'm staying inside.
OregonLive wildfires map.
Tips on managing orange skies from
freudiancascade . "I suspect a lot of Americans didn't hear about it, but the sky has gone orange with smoke in western Canada almost every summer for the past several years." Also saved here.
COVID-19 stuff:
What If? The Coronavirus Conversation by Linda Lovick. "'What if one of us gets the coronavirus?' my husband asked me over our morning orange juice." A friendly way to have those sticky conversations about end of life and emergency medical care.
COVID-19 and aerosols by some aerosol scientists. Avoid enclosed spaces!
