Music, lovely and serious

10 Reasons Peter Gabriel's 'Solsbury Hill' Is One of the Greatest Songs of All Time by Andrew Unterberger. I hadn't realized it's in 7/4! No wonder I love it, along with the good lyrics and good musical lines.
I grew up with this album, The Parvarim: Judeo Espagnol Songs, Ladino Ballads of Sephardic Jews (full album on youtube). I listen both with the comfort of recognition, yes, these songs go exactly this way, and also with the admiration of a much more educated musical ear. Wow, those musicians are good, and listen to those harmonies!
I really wish I had had music lessons as a kid. But at least I had exposure to an amazing array of world music from really good musicians. My parents didn't create any music, but they had, I see in retrospect, a discerning ear. My dad, mostly. It was his record collection running along the bottom of four sets of bookshelves.
On the serious side, did you know that the phrase "music theory" can be replaced by "the harmonic style of 18th century European musicians" in many places? And that (Western) music theory education is full of white supremacy? Ugh! Maybe I'm not so regretful about not having had any formal musical education. I don't often sit and watch 45 minute videos but this one is well done and well worth watching.
