Speak up, speak out with love

There is no perfect way to be an activist. There is no perfect way to live. There is no perfect way to speak up, speak out, take a stand. And yet, if we are silent, we are complicit with our society's abuses of power.

Thanks to gingicat for posting about the Maccabeats' song about George Floyd, "Say Your Name." What I love about the song is how loving it is. The Maccabeats assert, Black Lives Matter enough to write and perform a song, to put it out there and say they care.

Thanks also for linking to their post http://www.maccabeats.com/say-your-name/ in response to people's condemnation of their song. Beware the comments! Apparently we are so deep in the pit of white supremacy that some people can't make room for a group of white Jewish men to say, "This Black man's life matters."

Thanks for sharing. I don't pretend to understand the reasons why this would provoke such an outrage, but it seems tragic that paying tribute to the life of a person who was killed by the State would produce that kind of vitriol.

I wonder if some people on the edge of whiteness try to push further toward the center rather than reaching a hand to people of color.

From start I've read, it seems like whiteness threatens to exclude someone from what little privilege they have from being white-passing if they try to help people of color. Whiteness tells the people on the fringe that they have to prove they're loyal to whiteness if they want to stay.
