In addition to cutting my hair this weekend (photo added), I repaired my bed, ran errands on my bike in the rain yesterday and the sunshine today, did basic maintenance on my older bike while the new one is in the shop for less basic maintenance, baked muffins for the first time since I left Portland, had three zoom meetings today with friends, walked over (and up!) to a small craft fair, did 15 minutes of yoga, and this evening I might even finish my November accounting if I don't suddenly run out of energy like I did yesterday.

A lot of this stuff has been on my list for a while, including taking my bike into the tiny Pioneer Bike Shop that I used to frequent when I lived here before, and that is still run by the same solo guy 17 years later. I'm so glad he's still there! The disc brakes have been squealing ever since I got the rotors replaced in Portland before I left, and that shop said it would wear off, but 6 months later the noise is somewhat better but not gone, so I'll see if it can be fixed. They were silent before!

My bed is a platform futon frame. The slats are anchored at the edges, and then supported down the middle longwise by a narrow board under each half, and each narrow board has a single 1x4 board supporting it, held in by 2 wood pegs and a screw. When I took the frame apart in Portland, I noticed the screws were bent and one peg on each side was snapped. It has taken this long to have the time and energy to address that.

I folded the futon up on one half of the bed and took out the long board on the other half. When I took off the supporting board, I remembered about the broken pegs. I took the boards to a local futon shop to ask if I could buy a different arrangement to support the futon, since the frame itself is still fine. They offered to sell me a beautiful platform frame with tatami mats instead of slats for $1249. Definitely an upgrade, maybe someday.

Meanwhile I stopped at a small hardware store and they sold me a bag of 12 birch pegs of the correct size for $4.99. I brought everything home, successfully drilled out the broken pegs, and reassembled the bed. It's a lot more stable. I think I want to get two additional 4x4 supports under each long board to take the pressure off those pegs, even though they're more solid than the original ones.
