Yesterday I was chatting at the bus transfer station with a gentleman who's a chef -- lots of experience, graduated from a 2-yr culinary school. Our town is full of people who stay because it's lovely, and the best kind of job he could find was $12/hr. That was better than his former job, $10/hr., but both paid some health insurance.
Unfortunately there was ONE DAY between coverages; he badly broke his leg, needing surgery, developed infection, more surgery ... If he'd had insurance and decent care, he would be walking fine by now. I'm afraid he'll be dragging that frozen ankle for the rest of his life. Frankly I don't know how he manages the evident pain as he's scooting around the kitchen.
I just talked to someone who needed brain surgery while she was between jobs/insurances. Fortunately she could retroactively sign up for COBRA (and physically she's fine as well).
