Patched that tube today. It was easier to get the tire on and off, but still not fun. Had a lot of time to do it, because the power was out for two hours. Fortunately, last summer I made a point of figuring out how to get into the garage when the electric door-opener is out of commission.
Tube still didn't hold air post-patching. Called the bike shop a few blocks from here, and they charge considerably less than yesterday's shop. Happily walked the wheel over there and handed over $10 for a new tube and an operational back wheel. Yay. All done with bike maintenance for a while, I sincerely hope!

Lessons learned:
- Being prepared and thinking ahead pay off.
- Doing things myself is not a bad thing.
- Paying for help is not a bad thing either.
- Bike lighting systems keep improving! I eyed one at the store today, but decided to stick with what I have for now.
