Argh! Tried to transfer a second web hosting account to my web host, and they screwed it up and dripped testosterone across the phone wires to boot. The support guy was all confused and tried to make out like it was my fault. GASLIGHTING NOT OKAY!!!

So I wrote a support ticket saying here's a problem this is unacceptable your staff needs more training and got told there was too much "vitriol" and they'll be happy to help me move my account elsewhere. Okay! You got yourself a deal! They clearly don't know from vitriol except obviously it's the tone argument I don't even need to get into it with them. ARGHH!!!!

This isn't the first time they've been "too busy" to get things right, either.

I encountered this with a furnace repair company a while back too. All vague, "too busy" to leave me with a working furnace after routine maintenance and "too busy" to respond when I call them on it.

You know what I hate the most? The sneaking suspicion that it is my fault somehow and if only I were nicer quieter better somehow I wouldn't have these problems. Oh yeah, bike shops do it too. "Spokes just break on new wheels sometimes." Really? I've been riding for 20 years and this is my first ever broken spoke. They did replace it when I refused to back down.

How can it be my fault when I notice they're trying to flimflam me? Is basic competence too much to expect? I think they try it because I'm a woman, and because they're used to getting away with it with women.

Anybody know of a competent respectful affordable web host? I'm going to try dynadot.com, I think.

ETA: dynadot.com NOT RECOMMENDED.
linkdisk.com YES RECOMMENDED. (yay)

ETA 10/26/2011: linkdisk.com NOT RECOMMENDED, partly for having a whole lot of trouble making my website work properly, but mostly for being blacklisted by a major provider for over a week so my email keeps bouncing. Now trying pacifichost.com and crossing my fingers. *sigh*

I don't know about asmallorange; but I'll ask my friend who used drak what she thinks as I know she hasn't switched services so she must still be with the company that bought them.

I think it's a trend in web hosting companies to avoid giving out phone numbers. I have a friend who works at dreamhost who muttered something about it being easier on the support staff not to have to talk to people on the phone. Don't know what that's about though. FWIW, we've never had hassles at dreamhost, and have always had a fairly prompt response to requests.

you might look into lmi.net (the little Berkeley ISP that could) but I haven't a clue what their limitations are for web services; I've been an email client of theirs for 15 years though and the address comes with web space.
