I figured out the Bog Mummy Hairstyle, via [personal profile] kaberett.

Basically: braid the top third of your hair. Make two rope braids (or any kind of braid) with what's left. Braid all three together, and make a bun tucking it behind the initial braid as you go around. Hold with a hair stick.

My hair is thick and nearly hip-length, so there's a lot of it. I usually wear it in a single braid, but it's getting long enough that the braid comes over my shoulder and tries to participate in whatever I'm doing, including giving massages. The end brushes my leg when I'm biking. So either I need to get a chunk cut off soon, or I need to find a different way of wearing it.

The hardest part for me, aside from deciphering the instructions, was doing a rope braid, since I haven't done those before. Getting better with practice. The first time I wrapped the finished braid up around the top braid, since it says "spiral," but then I figured out it's supposed to be a bun. A hair stick secures it reasonably well.

It's a great hairstyle, comfortable and keeps my hair out of my way. It could be fairly fast to put up, with more practice. It's easier on my arms and shoulders than making a french braid, because less of it is braiding up on my head. It survived a full day of work and dancing in the evening.

I did feel headachy the first two days I tried it, but I'm not sure if that was the new hairstyle or other factors. It is surprisingly sort of compatible with my bike helmet, say for riding a short distance to the store, but I wouldn't use it for a long ride.

I tried to take pictures all three days, but I had a friend take this one on the third day, and it's definitely the most successful photo. There is a hair stick in there somewhere!
