I lived just up the hill from a high school before I moved away, and could hear their pep rallies when I had the window open. Now I live just a short block from the same high school, so I expected noise might be a problem.

Fortunately, the pep rallies have been less of an issue than I expected. I guess the sound goes up the hill instead of toward where I live now.

What I didn't expect is hearing the sounds of car horns and chanting every morning. The teachers are on strike and demonstrating in front of the school. Wishing them a good outcome for their negotiations!

I think that uphill from noise, the sound energy has less space and so is louder than downhill where there is more space.

Won't swear to the physics being right, but it's something like that.

I'd believe that. A sound engineer told me you can't predict how sound will travel and what will mitigate it - you have to measure in different spots and try things out.

bargaining beyond salary and working conditions by adding common good clauses to address community issues has become more common in the past decade, beginning in Chicago in 2012, when teachers went on strike and demanded a voice in improving schools. They won a nurse and social worker in every school, resources for unhoused students, and wage increases.

We used to live within earshot of the UW's stadium. The fun part was listening to band practice. Less fun right after the game, when drunken fans honked pointlessly.

New to me too. And it makes so much sense! I'm glad they're advocating for resources for the people in their care, rather than (probably in addition to) trying to cover the shortfalls themselves like many teachers do.

We can hope for a good outcome for the striking teachers and their requests for better pay and better conditions for their students. (Surely there's a police budget with excess funds that can be reappropriated to help the teachers improve school situations and make the police not spend so much money trying to get the students into the prison pipeline.)
